What To Look For In A Grow Light

When looking for the best grow lights for microgreens, you may want to consider the following factors:

  1. Full-Spectrum Lighting - This simulates daylight conditions and wavelengths of light from the sun, giving your microgreens what they need to thrive. You’ll want light spectrums that include a blend of blue light, which can drive photosynthesis and leafy growth, as well as red light, which regulates plant growth and development.
  2. Color Temperature - This is expressed in ‘K’ for “Kelvin’. Your grow lights might have a certain color depending on their Kelvin value. Those in the 4000K to 6000K range are generally recommended since they offer a balanced mix of blue and red lights necessary for microgreens’ optimal growth.
  3. Light Intensity - This is measured in photosynthetic photon flux density, or PPFD. You’ll want lights that can let your microgreens grow without burning them with too much light. The ideal range is between 200 and 400  µmol/m²/s.
  4. Coverage - Make sure your light source can cover the entire area of your growing tray or rack. Giving them enough light will help prevent any uneven growth in your microgreens.
  5. Type - These grow lights come in different types, namely:
    1. Grow bulbs can be attached to existing lamps or fixtures. They’re perfect for growing small batches or in tight spaces.
    2. LED grow lights are also great for a small indoor light setup. LED lights are energy-efficient, able to stay cool, and long-lasting.
    3. Fluorescent light options (like T5 tubes) are quite popular for their affordability and even spread.
  6. Budget - Prices for grow lights may vary, so it’s best to consider how much you’re willing to invest. LED shop lights or fluorescent light setups are relatively cheaper, making them great options for beginner home growers. If you’re a more experienced grower, consider getting high-end grow lights with fully controllable settings instead.
